0 Four Covenant Radio Programs on Foundational Reformed Concepts

I feel as though I've just spent one of the more edifying and encouraging months of doing Covenant Radio with my good friend Bill Hill, with whom I've been co-hosting the program for just over a year. We began a series of programs covering basic doctrines of the Reformed faith a month ago, and have had some of the most invigorating and instructive conversations in recent memory on these topics. I would highly encourage any and all to take the opportunity to grab these broadcasts at the links below, and share them with folks whom you may know who might have some questions about these biblical concepts and issues. We were blessed with excellent guests who really made these programs simultaneously full of integrity from a scholarly and pastoral perspective, and enjoyable just as though our guest, Bill and I were seated around Bill's back yard table with a cigar and a good ale. (well, perhaps three cigars and ales to be equitable) :)

Election and Effectual Calling, Dr. Cornelis Venema
Regeneration, Rev. Chris Gordon
Justification, Dr. Guy Waters
Atonement and Imputed Righteousness, Rev. Richard D. Phillips

Please do check them out, and all our programs, at the Covenant Radio blog - and if you're desirous of a good reformed alternative to internet radio stations that you may come into contact with, please check out Sola5 Radio. Bill and I put in a fair amount of time putting the daily teaching programs, weekend lectures and Lord's Day sermons, in addition to psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, so that you all have a good and reliable place to go for music and teaching, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I hope you'll consider listening as regularly as you're able.

0 Recent and Upcoming Programming at Covenant Radio

Just wanted to send out a heads-up to you all about our recent programs on Covenant Radio and the next two weeks in a series we've begun on foundational doctrines of the Reformed faith, which we're really excited about. We've had excellent guests (and have more upcoming) and these are just great topics to kick back and talk about with Reformed brethren.

Two weeks ago, we had Dr. Cornelis Venema from Mid-America Reformed Seminary on the topics of Election and Predestination, and then this past week, we had Rev. Chris Gordon of the Lynden United Reformed Church, of Lynden, WA, talking with us on the doctrine of Regeneration. These were two very enjoyable programs, and I think you'll find them edifying and enjoyable as well. These most recent programs can be downloaded any time from our website.

The next two weeks, October 21 and 28, we'll have two very exciting broadcasts, covering Justification, with Dr. Guy Waters, and the doctrines of Atonement and Imputed Righteousness with Dr. Richard D. Phillips. We hope you'll grab the podcasts when they come out - which are always available at our website. Follow us on Twitter (Covenant_Radio) to get updates of uploaded programs.

Also, just in case you've not seen it, I do want to point out our 24/7 radio station online, Sola5 Radio, which plays psalms & hymns, sermons and lectures, and replays of Covenant Radio, the White Horse Inn, etc. We've designed it as a place you can always turn to to get solid Reformed teaching & good, edifying music to listen to round the clock. I don't think there's much out there at all like it.

You can access that from the links at the webpage for Sola5 Radio, and I hope you'll try it out if you haven't already.

0 Covenant Radio: Interview with Rev. Wes White on The Federal Vision

On Covenant Radio tomorrow, Bill and I will be conducting a very important and interesting interview with Rev. Wes White (see his blog here) concerning his former identification with Federal Vision teaching, and his leaving it behind - we'll also be discussing current challenges in orthodox Reformed and Presbyterian communions that the Federal Vision teaching presents. We have been looking forward to this program for a very long time - so we are particularly pleased to bring it to you. This is a program I'm sure our Covenant Radio listening audience won't want to miss - so please check us out at http://www.covenantradio.com. Expect the program to be uploaded sometime on Friday, and if you're a subscriber you'll have it soon thereafter.

0 Today on Covenant Radio: J. Mark Beach on Piety's Wisdom

Later today on Covenant Radio, We're pleased to be speaking with Dr. J. Mark Beach, Professor of Ministerial and Doctrinal Studies and Dean of Students at Mid-America Reformed Seminary in Dyer, Indiana. In addition, he is an associate pastor at Redeemer United Reformed Church, also in Dyer.

Today we'll be speaking with Dr. Beach about a recent book of his published by Reformation Heritage Books, entitled “Piety’s Wisdom: A Summary of Calvin’s Institutes with Study Questions”. This book is a very important contribution to literature for the church - a study guide to introduce people to the teaching of John Calvin in his magnum opus, the Institutes of the Christian religion. Please check the Covenant Radio website for ways in which you can subscribe to our podcast, as well as check out show notes and download previous shows.

0 Covenant Radio Broadcast: J. V. Fesko on "The Rule of Love" and "Where Wisdom is Found"

On Thursday, August 12, Bill and I have invited J. V. Fesko, Academic Dean and Associate Professor of Systematic Theology at Westminster Seminary California to talk with us on Covenant Radio concerning two small works he has published recently: Where Wisdom is Found - Christ in Ecclesiastes, published in 2010, and The Rule of Love: Broken, Fulfilled and Applied, published in 2009 - both of these by Reformation Heritage Books.

Both of these books have their origin in sermon series preached by Dr. Fesko, and are designed for use by study groups for working through the Ten Commandments (The Rule of Love) and Ecclesiastes (Where Wisdom is Found). They are both excellent and offer a Christ-centered view on both these parts of Scripture that will provide both edification for the individual Christian and much thought-provoking material for discussion by church groups. I would highly recommend both of them for such uses. We're very much looking forward to having Dr. Fesko with us, and hope you'll grab the podcast when it's made available after recording.

We're also very much looking forward to having Dr. Fesko on Covenant Radio at a later date to discuss an important upcoming work of his, to be released in October by RHB, entitled Word, Water and Spirit: A Reformed Perspective on Baptism. Once the details for that program have been worked out, we'll let you know of our plans for that upcoming broadcast. Again, visit Covenant Radio's website for podcast subscription details.

0 General Assembly / General Synod Round Table Interview on Covenant Radio, August 20

On one of the upcoming broadcasts of Covenant Radio, set for August 20, 2010, Bill and I will have the privilege of speaking with Wes White, pastor of Presbyterian Church, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) in Spearfish, SD, Dr. Darryl G. Hart, elder in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC), and Dr. Scott Clark, Professor of Church History and Historical Theology at Westminster Seminary California, author, and Associate Pastor at Oceanside United Reformed Church, a member congregation of the United Reformed Churches of North America (URCNA). The topic of our discussion will be the issues and decisions made at the General Assemblies of the PCA and OPC, and the General Synod of the URCNA from Summer, 2010. We believe this will be a unique opportunity to come together as Confessionally Reformed Christians to discuss the work going on in these denominations that share much in common.

One of the reasons we conceived of this program is related to the guiding aims of Covenant Radio: to help our listeners strengthen their understanding of and apply the foundational principles of the Confessionally-Reformed churches. We aim to help people hear what God's Word teaches us about glorifying God and enjoying Him in our lives. We do this at Covenant Radio through discussion of books, and topics by authors, pastors and seminary professors whose roots are in Confessionally Reformed Christianity - and seek guidance of these men and of our common forefathers in the Reformed faith deriving from both the Continent and the British Isles.

We therefore have a common interest in promoting and supporting the mission and work of our brothers and sisters in the Confessionally Reformed denominations in our country, and we felt that this program would serve well as part of what we seek to accomplish with Covenant Radio. In particular we hope that by discussing the goings-on in these churches at the denominational level, we can help people be more connected to the action of the higher church courts than they might otherwise be, or to let them know a little about things going on within broader Reformed community and outside their immediate denominational connection. We hope you'll join us for this broadcast, which we expect to be an interesting and informative, encouraging and challenging discussion of issues that face us in the church today. Please check us out at www.covenantradio.org, where you will find information about this and other broadcasts of Covenant Radio. Subscription information to the podcast may be found at the website, or by searching at iTunes.

0 Interview with John Bower on the Westminster Larger Catechism

This afternoon, Bill and I had a wonderful discussion with Dr. John Bower, author of a new book, "The Larger Catechism: A Critical Text and Introduction, published by Reformation Heritage Books in March. Dr. Bower is an active contributor to the Westminster Assembly Project, whose chief editor is Dr. Chad Van Dixhoorn of Oxford University. The main purpose of the Westminster Assembly Project is the dissemination of works concerning the Assembly and its documents, its members and their correspondence and writings. The Project has many sub-projects in view, one of which is the publication of six works in a series entitled "Principal Documents of the Westminster Assembly", of which the work he wrote is the first.

We spoke at length about the Westminster Assembly and the principal documents they produced, and in particular the Larger and Shorter Catechisms, and the Confession. Please check the Covenant Radio website soon, or subscribe via iTunes for this program.

0 Dr. Stephen Yuille, May 6 on Covenant Radio

Tomorrow, May 6, at 3:30pm Eastern time, 12:30pm Pacific, we will be hosting Dr. J. Stephen Yuille at Covenant Radio. Our program will focus on his latest book, "Trading and Thriving in Godliness", which is part of the Profiles in Reformed Spirituality series published by Reformation Heritage Books. The subject of the book is the piety of a little-known Puritan, George Swinnock. Having read this book and been greatly blessed by Dr. Yuille's comments and the selections from Swinnock's writings that are contained therein, I am sure that the time we have to talk with Dr. Yuille will also bless you as you listen to the program. Please join us at http://live.covenantradio.com, where you can listen live - or download the podcast when you're able, from our main Covenant Radio site. During the program we will take callers at our toll free number, 1 (877) 439-2962.

Again, this particular book is the third that we have featured on Covenant Radio from the series Profiles in Reformed Spirituality, published by Reformation Heritage Books, that highlights the writings and particularly the piety of the men featured in each. Upcoming programs will cover the other works in the series, including works on Horatius Bonar, Jonathan Edwards, Alexander Whyte, and others. 0 This week on Covenant Radio: Danny Hyde

Tomorrow, April 29, at 3:30pm Eastern time, 12:30pm Pacific, we will be hosting Rev. Daniel Hyde at Covenant Radio. Our program will focus on his latest book, that is just now available at Reformation Heritage Books, entitled "The Defense of the Descent: A Response to Contemporary Critics". The book takes a fresh look at the phrase "He descended into Hell" found in the Apostles' Creed, and we are very much looking forward to the time we'll have to discuss this important portion of the Creed with Rev. Hyde. Please join us at http://live.covenantradio.com, where you can listen live - or download the podcast when you're able, from our main Covenant Radio site. During the program we will take callers at our toll free number, 1 (877) 439-2962.

The book is the first in a new series - Explorations in Reformed Confessional Theology - from Reformation Heritage Books, edited by Rev. Hyde and the Rev. Dr. Mark Jones, both of whom we've had on Covenant Radio as guests. This series is a new effort to examine issues of confessional theology in terms of the texts of our standards, the history of their development, the theology they present, and the pastoral applications and implications of them. We're very much looking forward to our interview tomorrow, and to the next work in that series, as well, which we plan to feature on Covenant Radio in the future.

0 Today on Covenant Radio, 3:30pm EDT

This afternoon at 3:30pm, Bill and I will take the opportunity of our first live broadcast using a new live server to discuss the importance of daily Scripture study for the Christian life. We plan to discuss the issue from the point of view of Scripture itself - what Scripture teaches on the concept of the importance of knowing and studying the Word on a daily basis. We'll also draw on writings from J. C. Ryle, Thomas Watson, Charles Spurgeon, and others as we discuss this important aspect of our faith, and take your calls during the live broadcast at the toll-free number 1 (877) 439-2962

The web address from which you can connect to the live service from 3:30pm to 4:30pm EDT is http://live.covenantradio.com

As usual, we'll be recording the program and sending out the podcast to subscribers, and making it available from iTunes, etc. Check our main website, http://main.covenantradio.com for details and archived shows.

0 Covenant Radio Broadcast: Olevianus and the Apostles' Creed

Bill and I at Covenant Radio had an excellent discussion with Dr. Scott Clark on the second book in the Classic Reformed Theology series that he edits for Reformation Heritage Books: An Exposition of the Apostles' Creed, by Caspar Olevianus, a theologian on whose covenant theology Dr. Clark did his Ph.D. dissertation at Oxford. You can access the podcast at this link. Visit us for other Covenant Radio broadcasts here.

We had a long discussion of Olevianus, his teaching on the Godhead and Covenant theology, and his identity as a truly catholic Reformed theologian and pastor. After the discussion, and looking through the book another time, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Olevianus's method of laying out each article of the Creed, first by affirming the witness of Scripture - both from the prophets and the apostles; second, by describing the doctrines that stem from each article, and third, by describing in detail the beautiful fruit(s) that God will produce as we learn from each article.

We see here an early orthodox Reformed teacher affirming the oldest of credal statements from a soundly covenantal perspective. It is really worth the purchase price, and much much more. The book is a masterpiece in that it is concise, yet meaty - good for layperson and elder alike. Laymen will gain from a pastoral theologian describing in detail the faith that he professes - elders will gain in having much teaching material at their fingertips for teaching both new believer and mature saint alike. Get your hands on a copy (which can be bought here at this link) the book is beautifully and solidly bound, and will serve you well.

Don't forget also to check us out at Sola5 Radio, our streaming station where we replay Covenant Radio (this interview will get some airtime this week and next), Office Hours and Heidelcasts, The White Horse Inn, Christ The Center, plus plenty of Reformed preaching and teaching. You can access the Sola5 Radio stream directly here.

0 Today's Broadcast on Covenant Radio: Dr. Scott Clark and Caspar Olevianus

Coming up today (and uploaded to the podcast stream by this evening) we at Covenant Radio are going to have Dr. R. Scott Clark on the program to discuss the recent publication by Reformation Heritage Books in the Classic Reformed Theology Series, An Exposition of the Apostles' Creed, by Caspar Olevianus. Dr. Clark is a recognized Olevianus scholar, having done his Ph. D. dissertation on Olevianus's contributions to Covenant Theology (published as Caspar Olevianus and the Substance of the Covenant) and continues to work with Olevianus's writings.

As I have read through much of this work, I cannot more highly recommend it (and the Ames work which preceded it in the Classic Reformed Theology series) as a helpful call-back to important concepts for the church of this century. Olevianus's brief reflections on the Apostles' Creed in the context of his understanding of the glorious grace of God and His covenant, are well worth study and discussion for our people today. We hope you'll join us for this important discussion at Covenant Radio. Look here for an announcement that the podcast has been uploaded.

We'll also be replaying this podcast on Sola5 Radio, our streaming internet radio station, that you can access via the Sola5 blog, which is located here. We'd love to have you check out that station if you've not already - it's a unique blend of solidly Reformed teaching and preaching, psalms and hymns, and other music for your refreshment and edification. Here's our daily programming guide... so please do check us out either at the Sola5 blog or directly at this link. For added info for our listeners, we post daily specifics about programs that we're featuring at the Sola5 blog.

Our program schedule consists of psalms and hymns, bible reading, teaching on the Reformed faith and Reformation church history, confession and catechism reading, and solid exposition of the Word of God given from a confessionally-Reformed foundation, in addition to the re-airing of select Reformed podcasts.

If you have listened now and again and find what we're doing worthwhile, I hope you'll be willing to spread the word to friends and relatives who might be interested in our streamed content. 3 Christ's Merit and Our Salvation: Covenant and Justification in Olevianus's "Exposition of the Apostles' Creed"

Yesterday I mentioned that i've just obtained the new work by the German Reformer, Caspar Olevianus, An Exposition of the Apostles' Creed, newly published by Reformation Heritage Books in the Classic Reformed Theology series, edited by Scott Clark. The first in the series was the excellent exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism by William Ames, the English Reformer, entitled A Sketch of the Christian's Catechism, published last year, and which I also very highly recommend.

As I have begun to get into this work, I keep digging up nuggets of gold. Witness this one that I just ran across this morning, from the Introduction by Olevianus, immediately following the piece I quoted yesterday:
"We can see from the following that this covenant between God and us is a gracious one and does not rest upon any condition of our own worthiness or merit, but exists through faith alone. For so far as God is concerned, He, strictly speaking, makes the covenant with us when He seals in our hearts through His Spirit the promise of gracious reconciliation offered in the gospel (Titus 3:5-7; 2Tim 1:9; Gal. 3:6, 28-29). So far as we are concerned, we receive it through faith alone when we are graciously endowed with the Holy Spirit who brings it about that we want to believe and are able to believe the gracious promise of reconciliation through Christ (Eph. 1; Joel 2; Isa. 59). If you look at the Mediator, our heavenly Father has indeed received from Him the price of reconciliation and we have satisfaction in Him. For in the same way the Mediator was graciously sent and given to us, and also imputes to use that merit, the covenant is also gracious. So this whole covenant is purely gracious and exists through faith alone. With respect to God, the offering of the promise of grace and the giving of Christ Himself is gracious. The reception on our part is also gracious because it is the action of God in us by which He seals His promise on our hearts. He does this so that having been acted upon, we might act, that is, that having been made believers by Him, we might believe (Eph. 2:1, 5-10). All of these things are clearly described in that promise of the new covenant in Jeremiah 31 that I referred to above.

The reason why God wanted this covenant to be completely gracious was so that all glory might redound to Him alone...." (pp. 14-15, Caspar Olevianus, An Exposition of the Apostles' Creed)
Despite the objections of some in the Federal Vision camp, or those more recently who seem to want to echo the Federal Vision's objection to ANY discussion of merit, the grounding of salvation in God's gracious election and the just imputation of Christ's righteousness to His elect is an OLD idea - is not the product of any newfangled hermeneutic. Olevianus, one of the architects of the Reformation in Europe, as one of the authors of the Heidelberg Catechism, clearly teaches here in this little section of the introduction to this work - and elsewhere within, and (Scott Clark will confirm this I'm sure, as a recognized scholar of Olevianus) throughout his writings - that Christ's merit, the merit of the Mediator, is applied to us. We are reckoned FULLY righteous in the sight of God - and that righteousness is, sorry to say to some recent objectors - a meritorious righteousness, for it is CHRIST's righteousness, properly speaking.

How glorious is our Lord - how magnificent is His salvation, for He has granted and imputed the fully meritorious righteousness of Christ to filthy and depraved sinners such as you and me. We have to grasp both the depth of our sin, and the stupendous height of the righteousness we are imputed with, in order to really begin to understand the matchless grace of God...and, as we increase in our appreciation of the magnificence of this grace, we have all the more motivation toward thanksgiving and praise... and all indeed does to redound to God's glory!

Again, though my time in this book is small, I have to say it will be well worth the price. Grab a copy, which you can buy here and hear how this elder brother in the faith fleshed out the doctrines of the creed. You won't be sorry you did.

Our date for discussing this book and Caspar Olevianus with Dr. Scott Clark is now set - February 16 - on Covenant Radio. Look for the podcast (check the right-hand sidebar of this page for subscription instructions) and be on the lookout for rebroadcasts on our streaming station, Sola5 Radio. Daily announcements of programming highlights at Sola5 Radio may be accessed at the Sola5 blog.

0 Covenant Radio: Joel Beeke on Christian Piety and John Calvin, Tomorrow

On Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 6:30 PM ET we at Covenant Radio will be speaking with Dr. Joel Beeke on the book The Soul of Life: The Piety of John Calvin. This is a fantastic little book which includes a biography and summary of Calvin's teaching on the Christian Life by Dr. Beeke, and short selections from his commentaries, sermons and the Institutes of the Christian Religion. It's a treasure trove of thoughts on piety by our elder brother in the faith, and we are privileged to be able to talk with Dr. Beeke on Covenant Radio about the book, and Calvin's teaching on piety.

Our intention is to broadcast this discussion live on Sola5 Radio (more information on that will be released Wednesday or Thursday so check back often). It will also be accessible in the usual Covenant Radio podcast, which is available by subscribing either at iTunes, Zune, or from this direct address. You can also go to the Covenant Radio website to browse past programs.

In this particular broadcast we are going to be offering a discount code for those who are interested in purchasing one of the books in this series. So be sure to tune in and listen either to the live broadcast or via podcast.

This series commences tomorrow, but will encompass all the books in the Profiles in Reformed Spirituality Series published by Reformation Heritage books.

0 Sola5 Radio Regular Daily Programming Stream has Begun

Ever since the cancellation of New Geneva Radio (a teaching, preaching and music ministry of a good friend's church) several years ago, the internet streaming of solid Reformed/Presbyterian teaching has been more or less missing from the internet. We have tried with our latest venture, supported by the Covenant Radio podcast, to address this lack with Sola5 Radio. Our weekly schedule is now loaded at the Sola5 Radio blog, and can be obtained directly here.

We're really pleased to offer this streaming programming, and hope that you'll find it edifying and a good alternative to the over-the-air radio that in most areas of the country and world leaves MUCH to be desired. Our daily plan includes streaming from 7am ET to 9pm ET M-F and on the Lord's Day, and 7am - 5pm ET on Saturday.

From my earlier announcement, here is the basic plan of our programming. We hope that you'll find this edifying and a good alternative to over-the air radio - our desire is for this streaming station to be a constant source of solid instruction and exposition of the Word of God, as well as an outlet for the rebroadcast of sound Reformed programs. We'll be featuring each new Covenant Radio podcast on the Friday after it's recorded, as well as "back-issues" at other times during the week. We're also pleased to offer rebroadcasts of a sister podcast, Christ the Center, which offers edifying discussions of important issues for Reformed Christians, and Dr. Scott Clark's Office Hours podcasts, which feature discussions with professors at Westminster Seminary California. Finally, we also intend to feature rebroadcasts of the White Horse Inn radio program. Our teaching and preaching segments will feature Dr. Joe Morecraft on the History of the Reformation, Dr. Joel Beeke on Genesis and Dr. Alan Cairns on Romans. Interspersed with this will be readings from the Geneva Bible and various classical, Jazz and contemporary Christian pieces. We also plan to include teaching series such as audio from the Ligonier National Conferences, the Banner of Truth Conferences, and other Reformed gatherings. PLEASE DO give us feedback at the Sola5 Radio blog, or here. We hope to serve up an edifying and enjoyable menu, and want to make sure that what we produce is just that.

In order to connect to the online stream, you can go to the Sola5 Radio blog. You can also go directly to http://loudcity.com/stations/sola5-radio to get the stream.

0 Double Dip Day at Covenant Radio

At Covenant Radio today we're going to have two programs. The first we're recording at 2pm EST with Jim Barr, a representative of BibleWorks, and in it we plan to introduce the software package to the listeners, presenting its history, primary strengths and the niche it has in the Bible software market, etc. Bill and I both use BibleWorks a great deal and have found it to be an excellent resource for pastors and teachers who desire to study the Biblical text from the perspective of the original languages. I will be posting another couple reviews of BibleWorks here at In Principio Deus (label: Bibleworks 8 Reviews) in the coming weeks as I continue to become familiar with its analysis and study capabilities. I believe Bill will be too at his blog, The Parchment.

The second show today will actually be live, commencing at 6pm EST, and will be Part 2 of our discussion with Dr. Michael Horton of his book, The Gospel Driven Life. We are very much looking forward to resuming our conversation on this key element of the Christian faith, and invite any of you who are able to to listen in LIVE, at http://live.covenantradio.com. If you're unable to tune in live, you can, as always grab the podcast, which should be made available tomorrow. The Covenant Radio podcast can be subscribed either at iTunes, Zune, or from this direct address.

If you've not got a copy of this book, get one - it's well worth the extremely low price as a reminder of the greatness and glory of the Gospel message. You'll be glad you did.
